Intensive Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy

Cognitive behavioural psychotherapy focuses on identifying unhelpful patterns/cycles of thoughts, feelings and behaviour then working together to change these factors. This is with the hope that they start to have less of a negative influence on your life. Cognitive behavioural psychotherapy emphasises how our thoughts in particular situations can influence us physically , emotionally and behaviourally.

CBT is a collaborative therapy therefore it requires the client to pick goals and a focus during early sessions and we work together to explore , challenge and change.

The client plays an active role during the sessions. There will also be an expectation for the client to engage in some work outside of their sessions such as recording thoughts, gradually  changing certain behaviours/cycles and using the discoveries and learning from inside of the therapy session outside of the session.

There are many different CBT approaches /models for a lot of problems, therefore as a CBT practicing therapist we can be flexible with the approach.

For many people, they have had experiences with CBT though the NHS however to note*  , for many after they have been offered a referral to primary care therapy the first stage of therapy in the NHS provides you with CBT informed intervention rather  than  actually CBT therapy (unless the client is stepped up to higher speciality). So for those who have not been 'stepped up'  haven’t actually expedited full CBT therapy.

EMDR- Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing

This modality is used to treat PTSD/ trauma and phobias, it is currently the most effective trauma/PTSD treatment.

EMDR therapy focuses on traumatic memories, identifies trauma based beliefs, then uses eye movements and/or taps to aid in the processing of the memories. This in turn reduces the distress and anxiety associated with the trauma and memories.

EMDR can be used either face to face or online via video. I have experience using both, a lot of people prefer using EMDR in their own environment as they feel more comfortable being accessing vulnerable memories this way.

Cognitive Processing Therapy

Cognitive processing therapy is a trauma informed therapy.

When we go through something traumatic it can change the way we think about ourselves the world and others around us. In particular we may hold difficult beliefs centred around these particular domains ; safety, trust, control, responsibility, self esteem and intimacy.

The focus of this therapy is based around addressing and challenging some of these helpful and difficult beliefs that are connected to the traumatic experience. The aim is that the feelings associated with the beliefs are reduced over time and the belief has less of an impact on the persons behaviour/ actions and life.

The difference between this and trauma informed CBT and EMDR is that there is less emphasis on reliving the trauma based memory during therapy.

For trauma/ PTSD I also offer:

  • EMDR

  • Trauma informed Cognitive behavioural therapy.

  • Prolonged exposure

For some a combination of approaches to treat trauma may be needed.

Graded exposure therapy

Graded exposure is mainly a form of behavioural therapy that works by first identifying where a persons phobia may come from, why it's so scary for them. Then the next stage slowly exposes them to their phobia at different stages until they start to experience a reduction in fear and anxiety relating to the phobia/fear.

This process may seem daunting , however it can be taken however slow or fast the client wishes, we can take it 'a step at a time'. For example after a few session, the exposure may start with looking at the word of the phobia , then reading about it and gradually building up.

An Integrative Therapy approach to complexity
As a therapist and a mental health professional I usually work in a holistic and collaborative way . This usually looks like the client and therapist working together to create an idiosyncratic treatment plan combining all of he therapy modalities that I am trained in for instance CBT, DBT skills and EMDR processing or psychodynamic informed therapy with CBT therapy  or EMDR processing and grounding work with/before TFP. (Transference focussed Psychotherapy. Working in this integrative way ensures a tailored and effective treatment plan and therapy journey to wherever your destination maybe weather its healing, processing, discovery or growth. (it is possible to request 1 specific modality).

Motivational Interviewing and Life Coaching

I offer motivational interviewing and life coaching sessions or motivational interviewing can be used together with other approaches/therapies or as a stand alone approach.

Motivational interviewing (MI) focuses on behaviour change, and motivates the client to make their own changes in life.

Motivational interviewing and life coaching is a collaborative process and helpful when people feel they are experiencing a stuck point in life. I will empower you to move forwards and move towards positive changes in your life.

Motivational interviewing and life coaching is goal oriented, meaning that a particular goal/aim for change will need to be identified before hand.
